It was founded in 1771 by Father Junipero Serra who is buried on the site along with many native American Indians who converted to Catholicism. The Carmel Mission has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service and is an active Roman Catholic Church, holding mass on a daily basis. In addition to mass, the Mission hosts weddings, art and cultural events, and numerous other Carmel community events.
